Most small businesses use Draytek routers because they are a simple easy to use Linux-based unit with support for FTTC, ADSL and Cable or Shared Internet (in other words everything most small businesses will need).
At the moment, the model we’d recommend is the Draytek Vigor 2680n.
If you’re having issues with your broadband speed but want to try and avoid paying for an engineer to fix it, there are a couple of things you can try initially.
The first thing would be to:
Reboot your router. (Draytek routers have a power switch or simply unplug and plug back in)
If you are an ASDL user, check that the bell wire has been disconnected and listen for line noise (pick up the phone press 0). At the same time, make sure your router is plugged directly into the master socket and remove all other unnecessary internal wirings for the best signal.
If you use FTTC (marketed as BT Infinity), again, make sure BT has fitted the faceplate correctly and ensure that all unnecessary internal wiring has been removed.
After you’ve rebooted the router, try plugging a single PC into the router and then, from a command line, run the following command:
ping -t google.com
(if you are a Mac user, you don’t need the‘-t’.)
Ping time responses should be 5-30 milliseconds.
If it seems as though it is taking too long, the line may well be overloaded with traffic. And if a lot of packets don’t come back, there is probably a fault somewhere on the line.
In general terms though, getting these problems sorted out can be time-consuming and quite tricky if you don’t have the necessary skills or experience.
Ultimately and unfortunately, the only solution may well be to have to pay for a BT engineer to come out and visit your site.
