Do you need help & advice with IT Management?
If you’re looking at managed IT services in London, it’s surprisingly hard to find out what anyone charges. Plenty of providers won’t put a price on their website, and the ones that do often aren’t pricing the same thing, so comparing them is tricky.
We’re based in Sutton and have been supporting businesses across London and Surrey since 2006. Here’s what we charge, how hourly and monthly support compare, and what to check before you sign anything.
How much does monthly IT support cost in London?
Our monthly plans are priced per user, per month, and include unlimited remote support. There is a lower-cost option for staff who only need email, and a cyber security package you can add if your IT support is already with someone else. Phones, broadband, new equipment and one-off projects such as office moves are priced separately. Current plans and prices are on our IT support pricing page, and every price is confirmed at a free visit before you commit.
What does IT support cost per hour in London?
We also offer ad-hoc support by the hour for businesses that don’t want an ongoing plan. The current rate is on our IT support pricing page.
Paying by the hour is what’s called break-fix: you wait for something to break, then call someone to fix it. Dave’s comparison is that it’s like a drug, you need your fix. Nobody is paid to stop the problem happening again, so the same things keep breaking, and nobody is keeping on top of your cyber security, which is now the biggest risk to most businesses.
Hourly or monthly: which is cheaper?
For most businesses with more than four or five staff, a monthly managed service works out better value. With managed IT you pay a fixed monthly fee, and it’s in the provider’s own interest that things don’t break, so they spend their time preventing problems rather than billing for them.
When you’re just starting out, break-fix can be all you can afford, and that’s fine. Dave’s rule of thumb from running an MSP:
- Up to about four or five people: break-fix can work.
- From about four or five people: you need to start using managed services.
- From about 10 people: there’s a big step up in what needs managing, because you can’t keep track of 10, 20 or 50 people’s devices and accounts by hand.
Used properly, IT is one of the most cost-effective things a business spends money on. Only paying for it when it breaks means missing most of that value.
Why are some London IT support plans so cheap?
You’ll see providers advertising very cheap monthly prices. The remote monitoring and anti-virus software a provider needs just to watch and protect each device has a real cost of its own, before anyone answers your call. At a rock-bottom price something has to give: support is capped or queued, security means anti-virus and nothing else, and backup usually isn’t included.
That might be fine with six or seven computers. Once you’re bigger, you need someone managing your IT proactively, not just picking up the phone when it breaks.
How to keep IT support costs down
- Replace equipment on a cycle of three to four years instead of running it until it fails. Old kit takes more support time.
- Keep it simple. Don’t do anything clever unless there’s a strong business case for it.
- Stay with a provider that works for you. Don’t change IT company every three years for the sake of it. Find a team you like and work with them long term.
- Don’t cut cyber security to save money. Cut unused licences and devices instead.
