Windows 10 End of Life: What Sutton & Surrey Businesses Need to Know
Microsoft is ending Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That’s less than four months away.
If you’re running a business in Sutton, Cheam, Carshalton, or anywhere across Surrey and you’re still operating Windows 10 systems, you need to address this urgently.
Why This Matters More Than Previous Windows Transitions
Having supported businesses through Windows upgrades since 2000 – and I even did Windows 2 to 3.1 upgrades back in the day – I can tell you this migration is fundamentally different from previous versions. When Windows 7 reached end-of-life, businesses could delay migration with relatively manageable risk. Today’s threat landscape is far more sophisticated.
The current reality: Cybercriminals are already preparing for October 14, 2025. They understand exactly when Windows 10 support ends and are developing tools specifically to target businesses running unsupported systems.
73% of Surrey businesses still run mixed Windows environments
Local Business Impact: What We're Seeing in Surrey
Sutton Professional Services Firm
Recently, I was working with a professional services firm in Sutton town center – approximately 30 staff with roughly half their workstations still running Windows 10.
In our service area alone, we’ve responded to 2 ransomware incidents in the past 12 months.
Carshalton Manufacturing Company
A small manufacturing company in Carshalton nearly lost a £180,000 contract when their customer’s security audit identified outdated IT systems as a compliance risk.
The complete Windows 11 migration cost them £8,000 – a fraction of the contract value they almost lost.
Windows 11 Compatibility Assessment
A significant challenge that surprises many business owners is that not every computer capable of running Windows 10 can upgrade to Windows 11. Microsoft has implemented substantially more stringent hardware requirements.
Essential Requirements for Windows 11:
Processor from approximately 2019 or newer (8th generation Intel, AMD Ryzen 2000 series)
TPM 2.0 security chip
Secure Boot capability in firmware
16GB RAM minimum for business use (8GB is too slow)
SSD storage – if you’re still running spinning disk drives, it’s time to bin the PC
Simple Assessment:
If your business computers were purchased before 2020, there’s a significant probability they cannot upgrade to Windows 11.
Systems from 2018 or earlier almost certainly cannot be upgraded.
Still got spinning disk drives? Time to replace the entire machine – SSDs are essential for Windows 11 performance.
Your Migration Options
Option 1: Upgrade Compatible Systems
For computers that pass compatibility testing, upgrading to Windows 11 is provided at no additional licensing cost.
However, you may need hardware upgrades: 16GB RAM and SSD storage are essential for good performance.
Typical time: ~1 hour per machine (plus any hardware upgrades).
Option 2: Replace Incompatible Hardware
Quality business laptops: £800-£1,200
Desktop systems: £800-£1,200
Modern specs: 16GB RAM, SSD storage, latest processors for optimal Windows 11 performance.
Planned replacement is more cost-effective than emergency procurement.
Option 3: Extended Security Updates
Year 1: £50 per device
Year 2: £100 per device
Year 3: £200 per device
Not recommended for most businesses
Investment Requirements
Small Businesses (5-15 systems)
If most computers can upgrade: £1,500-£3,000 total project cost
If half require replacement: £8,000-£15,000 total investment
Medium Businesses (15-50 systems)
Mixed upgrade and replacement: £15,000-£40,000 total investment
Compare to average ransomware recovery: £12,000+ per incident
